Varsity Baseball Wins 1st Round of Sectionals

The Goshen Varsity baseball team (12-13, 6-8 NLC) picked up a victory in the first round of the Penn Sectional by defeating Elkhart by a score of 7-2. The RedHawks were led by junior Kyan Miller, who pitched 6.2 innings, allowing 2 runs and struck out 5 Lion batters. Ryen Diaz came in for the final out of the game and picked up a strikeout. Goshen was the home team and jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Bryson Wilson was driven in by Miller. Along with his stellar pitching performance, Kyan Miller also picked up 2 hits, 2 RBIs, and scored a run for the offense. The RedHawks 1-0 lead wouldn’t last long as Elkhart picked up 2 runs in the top of the 2nd inning to jump out to a 2-1 lead. Goshen’s offense exploded for 4 runs in the 3rd inning and never turned back after that inning. In the 4 run 3rd inning Kyan Miller drove in Caelan Miller on an RBI double, Damian Castillo drove in Miller on a single, Castillo scored on a Colton Rapp single. Quinn Shreiner Landes also scored on a successful double steal of home and 2nd base. Kyan Miller would hold the Elkhart Lions scoreless for the remainder of the game. Goshen added an insurance run in the 4th inning on a Caelan Miller single, balked to 2nd base, and a steal of 3rd. On his steal of 3rd the Lions catcher through the ball past the 3rd baseman and Miller scored. In the bottom of the 6th, the RedHawk offense added their final run when Braxton Cline drove in Kaden Witty on a single to left field. The RedHawks play in the semi finals of sectionals on Saturday morning when they will be the visiting team against the Northridge Raiders. That game will be at Penn High School and begin at 10am.
