RedHawks Split Double Header Against Lakeland

The Goshen RedHawks went to 2-1 on the season after splitting a double header against Lakeland on Saturday afternoon. The RedHawks lost game 1 by a score of 10-4 and won game 2 by a score of 6-5. In game 1, Lakeland jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning after back to back doubles and a Goshen error. The 2nd inning saw some similar offense from the Lakers with a walk, triple and an RBI groundout leading to a 5-0 lead after just 2 innings. In the 4th inning Lakeland tacked on 3 more runs extending their lead to 8-0. The RedHawk offense finally got going in the bottom of the 4th inning when Colton Rapp led the inning off with a triple down the right field line. Jensen Meikle drove him in on a single with the next at bat bringing the score to 8-1 after 4 innings. In the next inning the Lakers extended the lead to 10-1 after some walks from RedHawk pitching. Goshen's best offensive inning came in the 6th when Braxton Cline led the inning off with a hard ground ball and reached on an error. Colton Rapp was hit by a pitch and then Jensen Meikle reached on a bunt single. Karter Marcum hit a ground ball to 2nd base that was an error and Cline and Rapp scored on the play. The next batter, Mike Valera, grounded out to score Karter Marcum bringing the score to 10-4. Lakeland would hold on and win game 1 by that score. Ryen Diaz took the loss on the mound for the RedHawks in game 1 allowing 4 earned runs on 8 hits, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. Spencer Elliott surrendered 4 walks on 4 batters faced and was replaced by Colton Rapp who pitched 3 innings allowing 1 hit and 0 runs in his 3 innings on the mound. Game 2 fared better for the RedHawks with a great start on the mound from Bryson Wilson. He pitched 4.1 innings allowing 1 earned run on 6 hits and 2 strikeouts. Jensen Meikle picked up the win on the mound allowing 0 runs on 1 hit in 2.2 innings and struck out 4 batters. The offense wasted no time in game 2 with a leadoff double from Spencer Elliott in the bottom of the 1st inning. He scored on a sacrifice fly from Braxton Cline giving Goshen the early 1-0 lead after the 1st inning. Lakeland tied the game up in the 2nd inning with a solo home run. The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the 3rd inning. Spencer Elliott got things going again with a leadoff single. He later stole 2nd base which led to an intentional walk to Braxton Cline. That set the table for Colton Rapp to hit an RBI single to score Elliott. Jensen Meikle reached on a fielders choice bunt that saw Braxton Cline get caught trying to score. Rapp later scored on a wild pitch to bring the score to 3-1. Ryen Diaz led the bottom of the 4th off with a walk and then advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch. He was moved to 3rd when Spencer Elliott recorded his 3rd hit of the game and singled and stole 2nd on the next pitch. Cline drove in Diaz and Elliott with a single in the next at bat giving Goshen the 5-1 advantage. Lakeland was able to come back in the top of the 5th after a few Goshen defensive errors as well as some timely hits. The score was 5-5 after the 5th inning. The score remained there until the 7th inning. Braxton Cline hit a 1 out single in the 7th and stole 2nd base with 2 outs. Jensen Meikle was intentionally walked to give Goshen runners at 1st and 2nd with 2 outs in the final inning. Cline and Meikle moved up 1 base each on a passed ball and then Bryson Wilson was intentionally walked to load the bases. 2 pitches later, Karter Marcum watched a pitch go behind him for a wild pitch that brought in Cline to give the RedHawks a 6-5 victory.
